A Picture is Worth How Many Words?
Not a lot of writing today, mostly pictures. The above picture is courtesy of Dean Smith.
We departed Juneau at 0746 in the rain and very heavy fog.
By the time we arrived at Tracy Arm the weather had cleared, and while I wouldn't call it sunny - it was pretty close for up here. So, we elected to go all the way to the end of Tracy Arm, to the North and South Sawyer Glaciers.John Muir describes Tracy Arm as "Yosemite Valley, unfinished."
You decide.
The large icebergs were way bigger than a large house.
In Tracy Arm heading to the glaciers...
Captain Dean at the helm control!
Ramming Speed!!!
Back and then to the fork to the South Sawyer Glacier...
Karen & Dean, hamming it up in front of the South Sawyer Glacier.
Taking the fork to North Sawyer Glacier.
Note the Chartplotter screen. We are four-wheeling it over uncharted territory. The glacier has receded another 3/4 mile past the last time the charts were updated in this area.

We got to within about 3/4 mile of the glacier. The icebergs were simply too numerous, large, and congested to proceed closer.
There was also a cold katabatic wind blowing down from the glacier. As you can see in the picture, Dean's hair was not messed-up.
97 miles, 13 hours, and 2 glaciers later, we arrived at our anchorage for the night.
There are ten other boats here at the unnamed cove at the mouth of Tracy Arm. It may be unnamed, but it is clearly not undiscovered.
Good Night!
