Rather Madan Bay

Tonight's sunset picture at 2302 (11:02 pm).   So cool, I had to put it at the top of the blog.     Now back to our regularly scheduled program... Wrestling with the single anchor bridle; spoiler, I won.   We use a bridle to absorb the shock on the anchor.   Shock could potentially unset the anchor and pull it free - that would be not good. This bridle is about 35' long.  Once the anchor is out and set, I take that big chain hook and hook it to the chain.   Then I cleat the other end of the bridle to the big Samson post and let out more chain.   In fact, I put out about 50'-60' more chain (remember this bridle is only 35' long).   That creates a loop of heavy chain that acts as a kellet, further reducing shock loads on the anchoring gear.   BTW, if things look really rough, I have a double bridle I will use that threads through the two hawse holes on either side of the bow.   It is...

Just a nice panoramic video of tonight's anchorage in Frosty Bay, AK.   Video credits to Karen!

Did Someone say Cinnamon Rolls?

0655 in Meyers Chuck this morning.   We are supposed to have a semi-big storm blow in today. The blue dot is just off the north end of Meyers Chuck.   We are currently where the white dot is showing. On the wind map, the more orange-red the color, the higher the winds.   The more purple-blue the lighter the winds.  We are on the boundary between the two and we thought we would head up Earnest Sound towards the more purple areas (Frosty Bay). So, if all works out well, we will be in Frosty Bay this evening around 1600 (4:00pm). Cassy, delivering her cinnamon rolls this morning at 0710.   She lives across the bay on a small island, so she ferries the goods over by small boat. And my, what great goods they are!  Breakfast was poached eggs, bacon, fruit, and the cinnamon roll (Karen & I shared one, leaving us two in reserve). Steve & Judy's boat.   I think the C40 and others in this line are the best looking Carvers ...

Just a reminder.   There are two links, below.   One link is to this blog, the other is to our PredictWind Map showing our exact location in near-real-time (the red dot at Frosty Bay).   Our journey to date is the white line extending down to the Sucia Islands, WA.  The Sucia Islands are just north of Anacortes.  I finally got the PredictWind Data Hub configured correctly as we were passing Sucia on our way up, hence, that is where our map starts. The online map is interactive, so you can zoom in, see our current heading, boat speed, etc. should you wish. What are we doing: www.OnBlueRedd.blogspot.com Where are we: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/BlueRedd/ Feel free to share this links with your friends and families.   Reminder, it is helpful to me, if you comment, please add your name so I can respond more meaningfully to you.

Coolin our Heels in Meyers Chuck

A view across the dock from our slip in Bar Harbor South in Ketchikan this morning.   Note the little white SUV on the back of the fishing boat named, Good Partner.   Looks like one of those Isuzu Trackers or equivalents, not that it matters other than they are compact and relatively low mass. We departed on time at 1100.  Just north of the boat marina is a float plane base.   I think float planes are really cool. Across the channel (Tongass Narrows) is the airport.   This is a view of the dock where ferries and pleasure boats can pickup-and drop off people.  Some of you have had that experience. While we were taking a picture of the airport dock, our friends Larry & Jamie were on the airport dock taking pictures of us!   Thanks guys! How cool is that! You can see the Taquan Air float plane base behind us. At the north end of the Tongass Narrows and on the west side of the channel is this little island with a lighthouse on ...

Prescription Postponement

A mature and an immature bald eagle.   I'm going to guess, mom & kid, but I don't know my bald eagles very well. As I mentioned in my blog from yesterday, we delayed our departure for a day in the hope that the local Safeway Pharmacy would get my prescription delivered.   And they did!   I got a call from the Pharmacist, Norma, who said they had just received it.   I can't say enough kind things about Norma; she was super helpful and very courteous to me. It rained on & off for most of the day.  That meant inside chores. There is always work to be done aboard. Then we spent the afternoon reading on the fly bridge and listening to the soft white noise of the rain. I was voluntold that I was chef for the day.   Cool.  That usually means something Chinese.   Here, I'm preparing tonight's sumptuous repast by chopping green beans, red peppers, red onions, scallions, shallots, ginger, tons of garlic, and chic...
