Enroute to Ketchikan this Fine Morning
Good morning!
We were up and about around 0615 prepping to get underway once the tide rose a bit. Remember the entrance to Foggy Bay is twisty and shallow, so I wanted another 4' depth to play with.
Pretty sunny sunrise today, but cool at 48 degrees. The water is warmer than the air at 56 degrees - so no fog.
But first, the water is so filled with growth and marine life in Foggy Bay that it is murky, not dirty, but just loaded with growth/gunk. My sea strainers were filled with this gunk, so I had to clean them out. The sea strainers filter the cooling water for the engine, clogged sea strainers means no cooling water and an overheated engine. That would be unfortunate…
Seems like a poor design to me. The basic process, if you care, is to close the seacocks (don't want sea water flooding the boat), remove the top of the sea strainer, pull out the basket, rinse it off, then reinsert the basket and put it all back together. Simple concept, right?
Why did they run all the electrical, fuel supply hoses, some water hoses, and who knows what else under the sea strainers? And locate my two sea strainers at the front end of the engine, where it's hard to get at them? To make it more challenging, they located the fire extinguisher right above the sea strainer, so the get the basket out, you have to cock it sideways and wiggle it out, ensuring that water and smelly gunk get everywhere.
So, of course I got some salt water & smelly gunk in the bilge. Just an aside, I keep the bilges so clean you could eat off of them. So, then I had to clean the bilges. Somehow, I tripped the high-water alarm. Anyone know how to turn it off? My bilges are clean and dry again, and the alarm is still going off. I tried resetting everything I can think of, and it's still going off; most annoying. We put tape and a cloth over the alarm speaker and will deal with it when we are safely in Ketchikan.
Admiral Karen is driving this morning while I did some work and wrote-up this blog.
Ketchikan is supposed to be busy on the 4th, I hope we can get a slip.
Have a delightful Independence Day!
