Fog, More Fog, and Fog...

I've been told that sometimes it gets sunny in Alaska.   We are on Day 46 of our trip, and we've had 5 days of sunshine.   The fog and clouds in the mountains are really beautiful, but when the sun comes out it is really something else.

We departed Tracy Arm Cove at the reasonable hour of 0831 and motored in dense fog all day.   We arrived at Read Island about 1635 (4:35pm).

Enroute, we encountered a large pod (at least it was large to me) of maybe 6-7 humpback whales all around us.   We looked at the pictures we'd taken; just gray seas, nothing useful to share.

There are two anchorable coves in the bay on Read Island.   As we were pulling into the preferred cove, a small powerboat zoomed by us, went to the middle of the small cove and started fishing.

For this situation, think of the cove as a parking space.   You drive through a parking lot, finally find an open space.   As you are getting ready to turn into your space, someone else guns it and pulls into your space.  Annoying, eh?   This is why Karen won't let me have a Romulan Disruptor...

There wasn't room in the small cove for both of us so, we backed out and went to the other cove.   This one isn't as well protected (meaning that we are more exposed to waves and wind).   No big deal as the night was dead calm.   But still, I was annoyed.   Oh, well.

After anchoring in 37' of water we dropped the tender, Roe, into the water, climbed aboard and went for a tour of the larger bay.  We were on the hunt for bear.   We saw no bear.

We headed back to the boat and had a delightful meal of BBQ ribs, corn-on-the-cob, green beans, and salad.

I paired that with a beautiful 2015 Cascina Adelaide Barolo from their Preda vineyard.   The Preda vineyard is on the hillside just across the small babbling brook from their tasting room/wine making/cellar facility.

We visited Cascina Adelaide when we were doing our Alba, Italy trip last October, 2023.   There, we met Chiara Drocco, the daughter & granddaughter of the winery owners/winemakers; she was a delight.   She showed us around and her command of the facility, process, operations, etc. was detailed and complete.  My bet is that in a few years she will be running the place.

Anyway, they make a great Old World style Barolo.  One of my personal favorite wineries in the Barolo region.   If you can find some, try it.   If you don't like it, I'll drink the rest for you.  Guaranteed!
