Gone Fishing

Our friends, Bill & Nicki joined us in Ketchikan yesterday.   In addition to being an avid fisherman, Bill is also a superb contractor, having rebuilt my home in Edmonds over the course of seven years.   But most importantly, he was able to resolve the propane issue!

The problem was primarily that the whip (the connector from the tank to the regulator) was restricting the flow of propane.  We would build pressure but had only a teeny volume.   Apparently, the tank valve has a safety mechanism that restricts flow if there is no back pressure.   the whip has a similar mechanism in the "acme nut".   That combination was proving to be problematic.   So, Bill poked a hole in the diaphragm in the acme nut to allow more flow.    Then we discovered that the regulator was bad and not passing gas.   We tried another and it was bad too.   Fortunately, I had a third, and that regulator worked fine.   Buttoned it all back up and now we have lots of well-behaved flame on the cooktop!   Yea, and THANK YOU, Bill!

So, today, with the cooktop working, we are headed out to Yes Bay and fish along the way.   Looking forward to salmon for diner.    Come on Bill!!!

Here is the route we took from Ketchikan (at the bottom) to Yes Bay (at the top).   The dark blue line is our route.

To say this is scenic is such an understatement.  Verdant mountains, steep forested hillsides that run right to the water's edge and plunge into deep underwater canyons that are hundreds and thousands of feet deep.   The canyons above, continue into the canyons below.   Sometimes the water is a thousand feet deep, and we are only a few feet from shore.
