On the Road Again

This little bay up by Loring, AK is really beautiful.   It's tiny with only sufficient room for 1 boat to anchor in about 100' of water.   Very peaceful, except for the rowdy campers firing guns and setting off fireworks until the wee hours of the morning.   We couldn't directly see them, but they were pretty close, just up on the ridge top.

One the way, we spotted this little deer swimming across a channel.   Do orca like venison?   She made it as we watched her scamper up the shoreside rocks.

We scooted right into Ketchikan with the intent of reprovisioning, watering, and borrowing some excited electrons.   All of which we accomplished.   Karen & I found an old shopping cart on the dock, so we pushed it to Safeway, shopped, and loaded the cart, taking it to the boat.   We probably looked like the homeless with our cart...

At some point yesterday evening, my nav electronics spontaneously all rebooted.   Being used to Microsoft and PC products, I didn't really think twice about it.   This morning, I noticed we weren't charging from our big engine alternator (200A at 24V).   After a bit of diagnosing on the phone with Art and Brent (the masterminds of marine electronics), we determined that I'd blown a fuse on the alternator.   It had a 10A fuse, but the manual called for a 15A fuse.   I swapped in the replacement, and we are now charging again!   Yea.   I keep learning all the time.

The alternator is the white/black round thing in the picture...  The multi-colored screen, below, is the charging system display and control panel.   What it is showing is that we are currently charging from the alternator at 1058W to the batteries.   This is a good thing!

When in Ketchikan, I called the airport Manager, and she gave us permission to drop off Bill & Nicki at the airport dock.   Very cool.   We did that, said brief goodbyes and headed north.

We had a delightful time with Bill & Nicki and we look forward to doing this again!   I already miss their, laughter, fun, and care.   Good people.

So, now we are on our way to tonight's stop, Coffman Bay; about 56 miles north.   Our GPS thinks we won't get there util 2235 (10:35PM).   That's too late, so we may have to opt for plan B, something a bit closer.   But that make's tomorrow's run to Petersburg more challenging.

Plan B is Ratz Harbor.   Its 1945 (7:45 pm) and we won't even get to Ratz until 2130.   That is still late, but we will make it work.   Fingers-crossed.

Dinner underway was leftover Bolognese sauce over pasta shells.   Seafood!   Very tasty and easy!   No wine while underway.
