A Quiet Day
When I fill the water tanks from the shore, I use a filter to trap sediments and chemicals. Those filters need to be replaced as the old ones clog up. Yesterday, I filled the water tanks for 7 hours and only added about 200 gallons. That filter is toast. I don't have another. Today, we walked to the nearby hardware store and bought a house water filter housing, two hose fittings (3/4 to hose) and four sediment/carbon filter cartridges. I'm happy to report that my jury-rigged water filter system works great. I was able to add another 200 gallons today in about ten minutes. My proof of concept works. Now on to a longer-term solution (which I'll work on over the winter).
We decided to head into town for lunch. Ketchikan has a free bus that circulates every 20 minutes, so we walked to the bus stop at the nearby Safeway and hopped on.
Downtown, we went to a pizza place that we'd been to before, because they had great pizza, Fat Stan's is the joint. Bill, Nicki - look familiar? A bit of walking and Christmas shopping, then we caught the free bus back to the Safeway bus stop.I decided that I would make poached salmon for dinner. I didn't want to make the salmon exactly like we did last night. We needed to pick up some key items at Safeway; a white wine, vermouth, lemons, shallots, and a few miscellaneous items.
Back at the boat, Karen read a book on the back deck. Ross played some video games, and I watched the 49ers-Saints preseason game (49ers won - it is only pre-season, but yea!).
Then I cooked dinner. Salmon poached in olive oil, butter, lemon, and a bit of Pouilly-Fuisse with a lemon caper beurre-blanc sauce over lemon risotto, and green beans. This was paired with a 2020 Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuisse. I'm not a big white wine fan, as most of you know, but this went pretty well together. If I am going to drink a white wine with dinner, I generally prefer Chablis, Sancerre, Arneis, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pouilly-Fuisse. I find these styles compliment foods well.Tomorrow, we are changing the oil, & filters on the main engine and SE Alaska Diesel is going to troubleshoot and, hopefully, repair the generator. Fingers-crossed!
Bonne nuit.
