Anchored at the Falls, with Bears On!

We are anchored just below the falls in Lowe Inlet.   When we arrived, we were greeted by two black bears fishing in the falls.   They must be mother and adolescent.   One is catching the fish and feeding them both.   The other one just sits round and looks hungry (Hey, maybe it's the husband bear, like me?).

We were up and ready to go this morning by 0600.   And we had an immediate problem - it was still quite dark outside.   We had to wait until 0645 when it became sufficiently light to see debris in the water.    Someone (me), forgot to take that into account when planning our route and departure time.  In all fairness, only a month ago it was plenty light at 0400.   My, the sunset/sunrise times change fast up here.

Fog and rain didn't help improve visibility.  It started to clear a little as we motored out of Prince Rupert, down the channel, and out into the larger bay named Marcus Passage.

Here's an example of something that we don't want to run into...  Karen calls these "aircraft carriers" as they seem to attract a lot of birds that sit on them.

Once the fog dissipated and the clouds parted, we had some lovely sunshine.   So, we elected to drive from the fly bridge as we have a more open view from up there.

We saw a few humpback whales in the distance, but none were pictureworthy.   Humpbacks must be camera shy, at least for us.

Here is a picture of Grenville Channel as we continue our southward journey.     Note, we are actually travelling ESE still on a course of about 140 magnetic.

And we finally arrive at Lowe Inlet at 1435 (2:23pm) to the spectacle of bears fishing at the waterfall at the head of the bay.

The falls at lower tide and at sunset.

Tomorrow, we head to Bottleneck Inlet, 73 miles to the south-southeast.

  1. Ha! I know you do your share of cooking and cleaning up. And you’re the sommelier, providing a very valued addition to the menu. If Bear Jr were choosing the appropriate wine, he could be excused for not participating in the provision of the evening’s protein.

  2. Actually, Karen does way more cooking than I do and she's good at it. I excel at the eating and appreciating part. I do contribute to wine selection and dish duty. Maybe I should take up fishing...
