Beating North

This morning, we left Ketchikan bound for Santa Anna Inlet, about 56 miles to the northeast.

Once we entered Clarence Strait, the wind and waves really picked-up.   We had 4' seas on <3-sec period plus 38kts of wind on the nose.   Super Nasty...   We were taking green water over the bow and significant spray over the flybridge.   Even with that, the boat was pretty comfortable, and the seas were tolerable as we just motored our way through it.   It wasn't until we turned into Ernest Sound that things calmed down a bit.

When sailing into the wind, close hauled, that is called beating.  Not sure of the origin of the word, but you sure do take a beating when beating into wind and waves.

All in, it was a pretty uneventful day.   Ross did the bulk of the driving.   Ross earned his 100-Ton Master's license before I did, so here's to you Sr. Captain Adams.

Dinner is salad and Spaghetti Bolognese again.  One of my go-to easy meals!  Paring that with a 2015 Cascina Adelaide "per Elen" who is Chiara's Drocco's grandmother (see prior posting where I rave about Cascina Adelaide).  per Elen is their top-end wine.  It is simply spectacular.

Tonight's view...   Which picture do you prefer?  The one on Top or the Bottom?

One is mine, the other is courtesy of Ross.

  2. I'm going with the horizontal version, but both are awesome. I wouldn't have recognized Ross. Rain and fog, or sun with wind. At least you are on the water...
