Yosemite Valley but with a bit more Water
Today's coveted cover photo is by Ross of Punchbowl Cove last night.
So, we puttered around Rudyerd Bay (Punchbowl Cove is in Rudyerd Bay). This place looks like Yosemite Valley, but with a bit more water...
Take a look at these pictures and you tell me...
Big glacier-scared granite cliffs that tower thousands of feet over the fjords... You can't see the horizontal scratches on the cliff faces in the pictures, but they are there.
On our way south and west, towards Ketchikan, we passed New Eddystone Rock, a 250' basalt tower standing in the middle of a 1,000' deep fjord (Behm Canal). Pretty cool.
New Eddystone rock is a dense basalt plug of the volcano that erupted during the last ice age. It arose from the bottom of the Behm Canal under the glaciers. It is one of four such volcanos that have been found. All are dormant.
New Eddystone Rock was named by Captain George Vancouver when he was exploring this area in 1791-1793. He thought it bore a remarkable resemblance to Eddystone Lighthouse back home in England.
We tried to sneak into the north entrance to Shoalwater Pass, but Ross and I chickened-out. We decided it was too shallow when the depth sounder was reading only 11', and getting more shallow...
As the saying goes... There are old sailors and there are bold sailors, but there are no old bold sailors... Good call on Ross' part.
We tried the south entrance as it is supposed to be deeper. It was deeper, but still no great place to anchor as it is TOO DEEP! Most of this pass is over 150' except where its only 6' deep.
We ended-up anchoring pretty close to shore in 50' as the bottom slopes steeply up to shore.
I'm nervous. I've got my anchor alarm set and I'm keeping watch.
Fortunately, the wind is dying down. That plus the fact that the moon is in quarter means the tides and currents are less dramatic so hopefully, we will have a nice peaceful quiet night in this pass.
For dinner, Ross has requested Spaghetti Bolognese again. That's my boy. One of my favorites too.
G'Night Y'All
