Mr. Toad is in the House!

If he was on deck, he'd have been washed overboard in our version of a Wild Ride...

My go-to resources for weather are Predict Wind and Windy.  Great apps.  Neither ever agree completely, but they are usually close.  They were rather close today and both were a bit shy of accurate.

Predict Wind forecast 15knot winds, gusting to 20, 1'-2' wind waves, 4sec period.   Windy forecast 15knot winds, gusting to 18, 1'-2' wind waves, 3.9sec period.   I'm sure they are all based on the same weather models.

What we had was 25knot winds, gusting to 30, 4'-5' wind waves, 3.5sec period.   The period is the time for one complete wave cycle (high to the next high).  And of course it was all right on the nose.  Fortunately, we are in a boat built for these conditions so it wasn't too uncomfortable, though I'm glad we had no guests aboard as I'm sure they would not have been happy campers today.

A number of drawers flew open and barfed their contents around the galley (kitchen).   Nothing broken, and all cleaned up now.   To mitigate the disaster, we did place some chairs strategically to keep the various lockers and drawers mostly shut.   There must be a better way to secure all of these.   I'll post that to our Selene Owners Association forum and see what I can learn.

We headed out of Nanaimo at 0530 this morning (only slightly more civilized than yesterday's 0500 departure).

Look at those mountains and sunrise over the mainland, just north of Vancouver, BC.   We were still in the Nanaimo area and quite sheltered from weather and seas when I took this picture.

We are headed to Campbell River today and right now we are about 30 minutes away.   We finally got close enough that we are in the shadow of Cape Mudge so the waves have died down to about 1'.

Here' a picture of the Cape Mudge lighthouse.

More to come...

Got the boat safely into our side tie at Discovery Harbour Marina in Campbell River BC.   I pulled the boat parallel to the dock and let the 30knots of wind blow us in.   I had to use the thrusters so we didn't crash into the dock too hard.

Then, it was boat wash time.   Blue Redd got way too salty out there!

And now it's Friday wine time!!!   2016 Lang & Reed Cab Franc.  Outstanding wine, particularly when enjoyed on a flybridge in Campbell River.

We were in the process of pulling out ingredients for dinner, when Karen, yes the same Karen, suggested we go to Moxies and see if they have that killer Roasted Tomato and Whipped Feta appetizer we discovered last year.   What do you know, they did!   They also had that killer wine from The Hatch called "A Fist Full of Mothballs", 2018 vintage from .   Really, that is the name of the wine, and it is top-notch from the Okanogan Valley.   If you don't think Canada sports some excellent wines, then think again...

So, dine we did while watching game 2 of the Stanely Cup Finals between the Oilers and the Panthers.   The Oilers took game 1 in OT and the Panthers won tonight in 2OT.   Great series.   I love playoff hockey.

Go Panthers!!!

Sunset at 9:30pm from the dock...

God Natt...

  1. Man, that sounded intense! Those weather apps really gave you the wrong idea 😅 Said 15 knots, and the ocean showed up with a whole different plan. Drawers flying open, waves right on the nose… good thing Blue Redd is built for it and you handled it like pros. I miss those front desk chats before you both took off on this adventure, but it really looks like you’re living the dream. That docking move was smooth too using the wind to your advantage while staying in control. Captain level stuff for sure.
Can’t wait to see where you head next keep the updates coming! 🍷⛵️
