At Ristorante Blue Redd - Halibut Special!

Diane is the winner again.   28" halibut.

Fortunately, we all ordered halibut tonight at the onboard dining room!   OK, we only have 1 dining room; we are the prep, cooks, and clean-up crew, but whatever...

Thank you, Diane.

Jerry & Peter made a quick jaunt to the fishing store for yet more fishing supplies, we all breakfasted, then scooted (moseyed at a blistering 7knots) out to the Magoun Islands, about 10 miles west of Sitka.   This is where a Selene friend of ours, Patrick, suggested we might find salmon and halibut.   He was 100% correct.

I caught 2 small halibut (tossed them back) and a large salmon that escaped the hook.   Jerry caught a few halibut, but they were too small, so back they went.  Then Diane hauled in this beauty.

This was Diane's first halibut, ever.   The photo to the right shows where we were when she caught it.

Today, it was not raining for most of the day!   What a wonderful reprieve!   Still no sun, but at least it wasn't raining.

Here's Captain Diane at the wheel.

A few shots of our trip over to our fishing spot and then on to our anchorage in De Groff Cove.   De Groff Cove is a very narrow, shallow, rock-strewn entrance.

First there is the outer bay and then another narrow, shallow, rocky passage to the inner bay.

That narrow entrance is only about 3x the width of our boat and the channel is only about the width of our boat.  Careful navigation and caution...
All very nerve wracking, but I was encouraged by Patrick's recommendation, so I creeped into the bay at idle speed.   No problem!

The Grand Finale was dinner.   Exquisite.   Fresh halibut, boiled parsley potatoes, & broccoli.

Diane and her fish...

Preparation was a team effort and then the grilling was turned over to me.   The halibut was prepared with a bit of olive oil, lemon, garlic, and capers, then grilled & basted on the BBQ to medium rare (10 minutes at medium heat) - it was mighty tasty!

I don't have many white wines aboard, so I paired it with a lovely 2018 Canadian red from the Okanogan Valley from the Hatch called "A Fist Full of Mothballs".   Don't let the name or AVA fool you, this is a world-class wine.   Primarily Cab Franc and Merlot.   Superb!

And it started raining again.

And a good, stuffed time was had by all!

Good Night...

  1. This day was definitely a win! That halibut looks delish. 👍🏻 Crispy duck with a shallot cherry sauce over sticky rice here, with an Oregon Tempranillo. Otherwise I’d be envious. CManning
