Fish, Whales, Otters, Rendezvouses, and Birthdays

Diane caught the big Ling Cod today, but we had to release it.   Alaskan Fishing rules dictate that we can't keep it.

Today was primarily oriented around fishing.   We left Sitka on a day trip to some nearby islands for fishing.   Ideally, we would have been there about 1 hour before to 1 hour after the change of tide, but we were late by about an hour.   So, we mooched (jigged), hoping for a halibut or salmon.   No luck on those, but we did catch a lot of rock fish.

Here, Fisherman Jerry is preparing his tools for battle.

While we were fishing, a gray whale swam by.  He/she was just casually coasting along, staying shallow.  Here are a few pictures of him/her.

As we headed back to Sitka, a completely unthreatened Sea Otter checked us out.  They are so seriously cute.

Tonight, we had a mini-rendezvous with fellow Selene owners, plus Diane & Jerry.   12 people from 5 different Selenes.

Moving clock-wise, in the far back corner next to Karen is Patrick & Miriam from Spirit, then Jerry & Jenni from Forever Young, Diane & Jerry (our friends), Geary & Lois (in the light blue shirt in the foreground) from Raven, Pam & Rick from Jean Marie, then Karen & me from Blue Redd.   What a great and fun group of people.   We were at the Bayview Pub in downtown Sitka.

Karen had the crispy ravioli and I had elk tenderloins, which were amazingly good.   Next time, rare rather than medium rare, for me.

After walking back to the boat, we had birthday cake for Jerry who claims to have just tuned 39...

A bit of singing and listening to two of Jerry's compositions (he is a masterful musician) and some storytelling and then it was time for bed.

  2. Sounds like a great lot of fun! Too bad about the ling cod, though. Those are some seriously tasty eats! One of my favorites for fish-n-chips. 😋

Hope today is as much fun!

    Cheers!

  3. Today was Halibut Day! Diane caught a nice 28" one which we are preparing as I write. Should be yummy, if I don't overcook it on my grill. This grill is very temperamental and has hot/cold spots throughout. Fingers-Crossed!
