The Need for Speed
Ross loves to drive boats. He has only two speeds, ridiculously fast and ridiculously faster...We just hung out all day at Grace Harbour in Desolation Sound.
27 boats in this little anchorage tonight. Tight fit!Beautiful old classic yacht!
The weather was rain on-and-off all day until about 1830 (6:30pm) when it sort-of cleared-up.
We tried to go out in Roe earlier and got promptly soaked in a rainstorm.
No being ones to give up easily, we went out again this evening.
One of the many "cabins" around the shore. Some are for sale. I think I'll stay with my boat! Here's another, with a pretty lobster boat out front."Lobster" is a style of boat that originated with the lobster fishermen in Maine. They don't fish for lobster here.

Hey, I know this one. Let's take it!It's a stampede of jellyfish! These are moon jellies (or at least I think they are).
These guys are everywhere.
See all the white-ish dots, those are all jellyfish.
They range in size from the biggest we saw at over 7" diameter, to the smallest at under 1/2".

They come in with the rising tide and depart the bay when the tide goes out.
Years ago (1976 to be exact), my sister, Jenn, & I caught one and fed it a piece of bacon. I think we spoiled it as it seemed to be really happy with that treat! I would have been!
We've got to be careful to not suck one of them into our intakes. I've not had to do it, but I understand cleaning out old jellyfish from the sea strainer is no fun for humans and fatal for the jellyfish.

Tomorrow, we head out at 0730 to Egmont on the Sunshine Coast, about 52 miles away. As usual, we have to time the currents. This time at the Sechelt Rapids by Egmont. We need to be there about 1500 (3:00pm). The currents run upwards of 12knots at full bore, and we can't go that fast, not to mention the huge steep waves that that flow generates. So, we depart at 0730.
Good Night All...

Looked like a fun day, despite the gloomy weather. Fun fact: a group of jellyfish can be called a “swarm” or a “bloom” … or, my favorite, a “smack” of jellyfish! 🤣 Cheers! -CManning
ReplyDeleteThat classic wood yacht looks almost identical to my grandfather's boat when I was a kid. Probably bigger, as his boat was only 38 or so feet. I loved being on the Sound in that boat. It was slow, but comfortable. Built in 1921.
ReplyDeleteAlso, watch out for the jelly fish with the yellow/orange centers. They sting!
ReplyDeleteI don't plan on being in the water with them. It's 49 degrees out there! You know me, I don't like anything under about 80 degree water!
