Kumealon Lagoon

At high tide, these rapids run the other direction.   Clearly, at low tide, we cannot enter.

Here is our approach to the rapids at the mouth of the lagoon.   Really fishy/smelly foam all over the water, just like in front of the waterfall at Lowe Inlet.   I wonder what that's all about...
More icky foamy stuff.   Must be a lot of decomposing protein in the water.

This photo was taken as we departed Blue Redd, bound for the lagoon in nice sunny, clear, warm weather.
Yup, Karen was with me too.
A killer rock in the middle of the channel, well disguised with green stuff all over it.   At a higher tide level, it would be all but invisible in the water.

For what it's worth, the tide range here is 21+ feet.  Our adventure to the lagoon was near low slack.
More pictures of our beautiful anchorage.   That's Blue Redd in the bay as we head back from the lagoon in a sudden squall.   The temp dropped 10 degrees, the winds picked up significantly, and the rain came down fairly hard for about 5 minutes.

We made it back to the boat a bit damper, but no worse for wear.
A nice warm dinner of "Asian Beef Stew".   OK!  Whatever, but it was quite good.

After the squall...   All is calm and good again.

The blog for the day is complete, so it's off to bed.   Tomorrow morning, we head northwest 33 miles to Prince Rupert.   We should depart about 0800 and arrive about 1400 (2:00pm).   Prince Rupert is the northernmost Canadian town we will visit on our journey.   After that, we are in Alaska, Baby!

    Interesting to hear about the smells (good and bad). It’s a part of the experience your pictures can’t convey. Sound is another sense we’ll need you to describe in order to get the full experience.

    Made me wonder if you can smell dinner drifting from other galleys when you’re not the only ship anchored somewhere overnight. 🤔 What can you smell and hear?

      Hmmm, that's interesting. I will try to take a few more videos and upload them to YouTube. Those may not come with scents, but I can get the sounds.

      I do have a few videos Ive posted that are on the blog, and most of those you can hear the soothing sounds of the rain - we get a lot of that up here in early summer.

  Playing with propane again.   My manifold was all bolted down so it cannot move.  Last year when we closed out the season it was all fine.   When we got aboard a few days ago, Karen said she smelled propane. Leaping into action, I chased the smell to the propane locker.   After much fiddling, I discovered it was both the manifold and the regulator.   The manifold fittings were all loose and if I held the flashlight at just the right angle, I could see the density waves of propane flowing out of the regulator vent.   How can this happen?    Regardless, it is now all fixed and my locker is clean (soapy water at close to 50/50 mix is a pretty good, if not goopy cleaner).   All tightened, fittings are taped with yellow teflon tape + blue PFTE compound, tightened hand-tight + 1 turn with a wrench.   So far, we haven't smelled more propane nor have we blown up. Pitter-Patter...

  That's the sound of the steady rain and they tink & plink into the water, or pitter-patter according to Google Gemini.   It is entrancingly beautiful. Today started out just as the weather forecasters had promised.   The rain cleared-up by 1100 (11:00am) and the winds died down to an acceptable 15 knots. We left Green Island Anchorage and headed north.   We passed this point (Kwakume Point in Fitz Hugh Sound) where there were 3 humpbacks breaching, fin-slapping, and spy-hopping.   Unfortunately, they were too far away to capture with the camera. To be clear, we do not chase the whales nor approach them.   They have to come to us - that is their choice. Yup, that's Captain Karen at the helm. You always have to keep vigilant for logs and rafts of kelp that float around. We Crossed Cape Caution!

  That pokie out landmass in the picture is Cape Caution.  It doesn't look like much with the overcast and fog.   I've learned that anything called "Cape" is something to be taken seriously. The day started out at 0615 (6:15am).   The winds were fairly calm in Port McNeill.   We eased out of the slip and motored around the head and into Goletas Channel heading northwest. We had a nice 2 knot following current, but unfortunately, we had a 13 knot headwind.   That meant the seas stacked up on a short period.   It wasn't too bad at 3' seas on a 2 sec period right on our nose.  The problem with this is that we'd go over the first wave, onto the 2nd wave, but dive into the trough just before the 3rd wave would hit. That sends our bow under the wave and makes for lots of saltwater all over my boat.   It isn't a safety problem as long as we don't venture out onto the foredeck and in these conditions - we don't.
