Weather (The Windy Bits)
Today's post is primarily about a specific aspect of weather, wind. As you can see in the picture above, there are two major cyclonic storms in the North Pacific at this time. The storm on the right is in the Gulf of Alaska and its rotating counterclockwise around its low (the blue-green "eye").Zooming in a bit more, you can now clearly see the blue low which is the rotational center of the storm. It is just to the west of the island of Haida Gwaii.
The color code on this wind map is at the bottom of the pictures. Purple is no wind, then blue, green, yellow, orange, red, brown, black, and finally gray denoting 50+ knots of wind. So, the red and darker shades are what I am principally concerned about.
Zooming in even further, you can now see a teeny blue dot where Cape Caution lies. Just north of Cape Caution is Green Island Anchorage, denoted by a teenier green dot. We are in Green Island Anchorage. I pulled-up the weather for this exact location, that's the pop-out just to the right of the green dot.
So, while out in Queen Charlotte Sound they are enjoying 35-40 knots of wind from the south, we are seeing only 11 knots. And I can tell you that at sea level behind the verdant forested hills surrounding the anchorage, we are seeing less than 1 knot of wind. And that is precisely why we are here and why we stayed here today.
What did we do? Some chores, like clean the engine room, de-pickle the watermaker, general cleaning, and wash the outside of the boat (taking advantage of the steady rain).
