Friends in Petersburg
The boat, Marathon, is owned and run by our new friend, Allen and his wife Ellen. They happen to be good friends with our good friends John & Susan, who are onboard to hangout with us through glacier Bay. Additionally, the boat next to us, Fortitude, is owned by Steven & Suzanne, who are also friends. Lastly, Peregrine is a few boats down and we met Doug and Karen in Sitka last year.
In the background of the photo, above is a large rock formation called "Devil's Thumb". That is a very impressive bit of rock.
From L-R, John, Susan, Ellen, & Karen. That is a recipe for serious fun!We had a wonderful dinner at Allen & Ellen's home last night (they live in Petersburg). Halibut steaks and the best crab cakes.
This is the view overlooking Wrangell Narrows from Allen & Ellen's home. What a great view looking west.
Here is a close-up of Marathon. As I understand, she is a primarily a purse seiner.A drawing of a typical purse seine is on the left side of this picture.
These signs were posted on the local harbormaster's office. I guess that is so we "non-commercial fishermen" can figure out what we are seeing when we come upon them.
It is the gillnetters that cause me the most consternation. You will see their boat and then maybe 1/2 mile away (or further) you might see a small orange buoy. That orange buoy is connected to the boat by a long net.

If there are multiple gillnetters operating, all you see is boats and orange buoys all over the place. I can't tell what buoy is connected to which boat or vice-versa
To make it more challenging, they place their nets across the channel, and we have to figure out how to thread our way between them all.
We spied this on the walk over to Alen & Ellen's home.
