Going Nowhere and Enjoying the View

 

Ducks in Madan Bay.   We tried to get a video of them exhibiting a herding/feeding behavior I'd never seen before.   As a team/flock they herded what I presume to be a school of fish into the shallows and then began diving and scooping them up.   We missed videoing the herding behavior, which was fascinating, but we did get a video of afterwards, not that you can see anything...   Below.


All alone in Madan Bay.   Just like we prefer.

Out for a ride in Roe, our dinghy (dink, tender, etc.).

We looped the bay.   Lots of good places for bear (grassy meadows with freshwater streams that run into the sea), but we saw no bear.

How peaceful.   Just us in this big bay.  Perfect!
Tonight's sort-of sunset photo.   It's only 2130 (9:30pm), we have another hour to go before sunset, and I'm heading to bed now.

Tomorrow, we are off to Wrangell, only 15 miles away.  We've got some boat chores to do before we meet up with guests, John & Susan in Petersburg in a few days.

  Playing with propane again.   My manifold was all bolted down so it cannot move.  Last year when we closed out the season it was all fine.   When we got aboard a few days ago, Karen said she smelled propane. Leaping into action, I chased the smell to the propane locker.   After much fiddling, I discovered it was both the manifold and the regulator.   The manifold fittings were all loose and if I held the flashlight at just the right angle, I could see the density waves of propane flowing out of the regulator vent.   How can this happen?    Regardless, it is now all fixed and my locker is clean (soapy water at close to 50/50 mix is a pretty good, if not goopy cleaner).   All tightened, fittings are taped with yellow teflon tape + blue PFTE compound, tightened hand-tight + 1 turn with a wrench.   So far, we haven't smelled more propane nor have we blown up. Pitter-Patter...

  That's the sound of the steady rain and they tink & plink into the water, or pitter-patter according to Google Gemini.   It is entrancingly beautiful. Today started out just as the weather forecasters had promised.   The rain cleared-up by 1100 (11:00am) and the winds died down to an acceptable 15 knots. We left Green Island Anchorage and headed north.   We passed this point (Kwakume Point in Fitz Hugh Sound) where there were 3 humpbacks breaching, fin-slapping, and spy-hopping.   Unfortunately, they were too far away to capture with the camera. To be clear, we do not chase the whales nor approach them.   They have to come to us - that is their choice. Yup, that's Captain Karen at the helm. You always have to keep vigilant for logs and rafts of kelp that float around. We Crossed Cape Caution!

  That pokie out landmass in the picture is Cape Caution.  It doesn't look like much with the overcast and fog.   I've learned that anything called "Cape" is something to be taken seriously. The day started out at 0615 (6:15am).   The winds were fairly calm in Port McNeill.   We eased out of the slip and motored around the head and into Goletas Channel heading northwest. We had a nice 2 knot following current, but unfortunately, we had a 13 knot headwind.   That meant the seas stacked up on a short period.   It wasn't too bad at 3' seas on a 2 sec period right on our nose.  The problem with this is that we'd go over the first wave, onto the 2nd wave, but dive into the trough just before the 3rd wave would hit. That sends our bow under the wave and makes for lots of saltwater all over my boat.   It isn't a safety problem as long as we don't venture out onto the foredeck and in these conditions - we don't.
