Trolling for Salmon in Petrel Channel

Nicki made raspberry buns.  She is now, unquestionably my most favorite guest!   The bar has been raised.   What are you going to do about it???

Bill dropped a baited line in this morning which was promptly ignored by all marine life.

As we troll/cruise from Newcombe Harbour to the Math Islands (Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Azimuth, & Logarithm Islands).   Someone was having fun naming this area, or they were a total geek.

Bill sets his tackle and goes after salmon.
And, we will be having salmon for dinner tonight.   A nice coho to boot!   Thank you!   Very yummy.
Alas, poor Nicki.   She could only catch rockfish today.   Lots of small rockfish at that.
What a trooper, she's back at it anyway.

There's no quit.   Refreshed, rockfish released, Nicki is ready to get back at it.
Cool-man-Bill.  Smug with the realization he was the only person to catch a keeper today.
But he just doesn't know how to quit.









A true expert fisher.


Petrel Point in Petrel Channel on the west side of Pitt Island.   The Math Islands are on the far side of Petrel Point.

This is our anchorage for tonight at Wilson Inlet on the backside of Tangent Island.   We tried for the cove between Cosine and Sine Islands, but didn't like the conditions, so we moved to another little anchorage only to find a boat already in there, so off on Plan C to Wilson Inlet.   Gotta be flexible.

This is what happened to that nice coho that Bill caught.  Briefly and lightly marinated in EVOO, lemon, garlic, ginger, soy, and black pepper.
Served with sticky rice, asparagus spears, and a tomato/cucumber/green onion salad.  Nicki baked fresh focaccia bread for dinner (unbelievable).

All accompanied by a 2020 CedarCreek Meritage (Merlot, Cab Sauv, and Cab Franc) from the Okanogan Valley, BC.

Perfecto!  What a great meal!
And our resident expert baker made key lime pie bars for dessert.  OMG, those are mighty tasty!   She is not allowed to go home.   Sorry Bill...

On the other hand, that is Bill in the background doing the dishes, and since he caught the salmon in the first place.... He can't go home either.   So not sorry!

Tomorrow will be another long day of fishing.  We head to the southern point of Pitt Island, Sacuritay Cove, 29 miles to the south at a blazing 1.5-2.5knots as that is ideal trolling speed.

But here on the Coho Highway (the local descriptor of this area), we have to do what we have to do to catch more salmon.

Amazing night sky.   I could lay there for hours looking at it - if it weren't so darn cold out here!

  Playing with propane again.   My manifold was all bolted down so it cannot move.  Last year when we closed out the season it was all fine.   When we got aboard a few days ago, Karen said she smelled propane. Leaping into action, I chased the smell to the propane locker.   After much fiddling, I discovered it was both the manifold and the regulator.   The manifold fittings were all loose and if I held the flashlight at just the right angle, I could see the density waves of propane flowing out of the regulator vent.   How can this happen?    Regardless, it is now all fixed and my locker is clean (soapy water at close to 50/50 mix is a pretty good, if not goopy cleaner).   All tightened, fittings are taped with yellow teflon tape + blue PFTE compound, tightened hand-tight + 1 turn with a wrench.   So far, we haven't smelled more propane nor have we blown up. My next project is to replace this domest...

Leap'n Leviathans!

Not us!   We spied this derelict boat along the shore at Point Thatcher, where Peril and Chatham Straits meet.   Somebody had a really bad day... We departed just before 1100 (11:00am) this morning heading to Takatz Bay, about 48 miles to the east. Trying to catch-up on a bit of work reading.   A friend of mine, Jeff Osorio, is writing a wonderful book on finance and I'm contributing what small bits I can. It will be on my "I highly recommend this book" list...   If you want to really understand finance in the context of a small/medium business, this is the best I've ever seen. Rather than pick a few photos, here they all are.   A pair of humpback whales.   Likely a mother and her large calf spotted in Peril Strait about 2 miles west of Lindberg Head.  We stopped for about 15-20 minutes to watch them play.  Scroll away... Pitter-Patter...

  That's the sound of the steady rain and they tink & plink into the water, or pitter-patter according to Google Gemini.   It is entrancingly beautiful. Today started out just as the weather forecasters had promised.   The rain cleared-up by 1100 (11:00am) and the winds died down to an acceptable 15 knots. We left Green Island Anchorage and headed north.   We passed this point (Kwakume Point in Fitz Hugh Sound) where there were 3 humpbacks breaching, fin-slapping, and spy-hopping.   Unfortunately, they were too far away to capture with the camera. To be clear, we do not chase the whales nor approach them.   They have to come to us - that is their choice. Yup, that's Captain Karen at the helm. You always have to keep vigilant for logs and rafts of kelp that float around. Today, this stuff was everywhere, it was difficult to steer clear of it all.  Perhaps the storms over the last few days washed this out of the mountains or ...
